Meet Our Founder

Mocha Girls

Mocha Girls N' Medicine was started July 10th, 2019 with the hopes of inspiring all women of color to pursue their dreams of being in the medical field. Did you know that only 2% of physicians in the United States are black women, and only 1.8% are Hispanic women? These are just a few of the many facts and statistics that put minority women at a disadvantage in the medical field. As Mocha Girls gained momentum under the name “Mocha Girls n’ Medicine” I started noticing more and more the disparities of minority women in other career fields such as engineering ( black women make up only 2% of this field and the same for hispanic women), business (black women make only 67.7% of a white males salary and hispanic women make only 62.7%), and law (only 10.5% of lawyers are black women and only 5.7% of hispanic women are). With that being said we have now transformed into Mocha Girls, giving you all the freedom to write your own ending. Whether you’re a Mocha Girl n’ Medicine or a Mocha Girl n’ Law we support and empower you to be the best you can be!

Hello Mocha Girls! My name is DeMaris Banister affectionately known as Mocha Maris the Mogul. I am an undergraduate student pursuing my bachelors of science degree in interdisciplinary studies- neuroscience. In the future, I plan to attend a medical school and go on to become a women's health physician. My ultimate career goal is to properly educate minority women about themselves, their babies, and helping them overcome the many obstacles that may come with womanhood. While I have always wanted to be in the medical field, this particular cause became near and dear to my heart, thanks to my younger sister. My sister and I are almost 10 years apart in age. When my sister was born, she was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit or the NICU.  Even at the age of 10, I recognized the stress and strain not fully understanding what was going on with my sister put on my mom. I also saw the strain that experience put on my sister even years after she was discharged. This event charged me to do something that could relieve the tension off them both.
